Programmes - Seed of Hope
Seed of Hope is a unique programme that provides vulnerable and orphaned young girls with the opportunity to attend a free two year course of education, life-skills and micro-business training.
Teenage girls who lack family support and who are without formal education are one of the most vulnerable groups in society, with many girls facing a bleak future due to teenage marriage, poverty and abuse.

The Sumerian Foundation is working with a partner NGO (Vision Africa) to provide seed capital funding, micro-credit funding and business training to the girls who graduate from the programme. Many of the graduates from the Seed of Hope school go on to run their own businesses, with some also producing clothes and jewellery for the social enterprise fashion house, Johari.
All profits made by Johari are reinvested back into the running and expansion of the Seed of Hope schools to provide opportunities to more and more destitute girls.
Establishing Johari as a social enterprise has been incredibly successful as an eco-system to sustain the expansion and running of the schools without requiring funding long term. The venture philanthropy approach also provides the teenagers who came from very hard backgrounds with self-sustaining opportunities and much needed confidence and self-esteem.
